Title of Event: Author Signing: Mel Tarman
When: Saturday, November 21, 2009 1:30 PM
Location: Katy Budget Books
Description:

1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

KBB welcomes back children's author Mel Tarman, co-author of Toby Belfer Learns about Heroes and Martyrs.

BOOK SUMMARY: "He who saves one human life is as he saves the entire world." --Hebrew Talmud Toby Belfer is now in the fifth grade, and she and her best friend Donna take a trip to Israel to tour the Holy Land. There, the girls visit Yad Vashem, the Holocaust History Museum where they learn about the Righteous Gentiles, the Christian men and women who aided persecuted Jews during the Holocaust. Recounting the true stories of twenty-six Christian heroes, this compelling book for middle readers celebrates the men and women who were determined to do the right thing, no matter the cost. Jozef Zwonartz sacrificed everything he had to hide a Jewish family. Alfred Rosner, a German Christian, was executed by the Nazis for helping Jews. Mother Maria Skobtsova was a Russian nun who was imprisoned in a concentration camp for smuggling Jewish children out of Nazi-occupied Paris. Complete with a glossary of important terms and illustrations of the heroic figures, this newest Toby Belfer adventure is an important lesson in world history for young readers. Including the stories of Corrie Ten Boom, Heinz Dorssel, Princess Andrew of Greece, and the students in Whitwell, Tennessee, and their incredible Paper Clip Project, this book will give children of all faiths the ability to believe, in the words of Anne Frank, that despite everything, people are really good at heart.

AUTHOR BIO:
A retired professional who worked as an executive, entrepreneur, and educator, Mel Tarman is a first-time children's author who is passionate about teaching young readers about the history of the Jewish people. Among his other achievements, Tarman is the recipient of the American Legion Merit Award for outstanding writing and he is the former publisher of New Ventures magazine for young entrepreneurs.

Otis Otis
by Long, Loren, Long, Loren
"New York Times" bestselling author/artist Loren Long creates an unforgettable children's classic.

Otis is a special tractor. He loves his farmer and he loves to work. And he loves the little calf in the next stall, whom he purrs to sleep with his soft motor. In fact, the two become great friends: they play in the fields, leap hay bales, and play ring-around-the-rosy by Mud Pond.

But when Otis is replaced with the big yellow tractor, he is cast away behind the barn, unused, unnoticed . . . until the little calf gets stuck in Mud Pond. Then there is only one tractoraand itas not big or yellowawho can come to the rescue. It is little old Otis who saves his friend. It is Otis who saves the day.

In a wonderful new palette, and in the tradition of classics like "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel" and "The Story of Ferdinand," Loren Long has crafted an unforgettable new storyaand characteracelebrating the power of friendship and perseverance.

The Gathering Storm
by Jordan, Robert, Sanderson, Brandon
Tarmon Gai'don, the Last Battle, looms. And mankind is not ready.
The final volume of the Wheel of Time, "A Memory of Light, " was partially written by Robert Jordan before his untimely passing in 2007. Brandon Sanderson, "New York Times" bestselling author of the Mistborn books, was chosen by Jordan's editor---his wife, Harriet McDougal---to complete the final book. The scope and size of the volume was such that it could not be contained in a single book, and so Tor proudly presents "The Gathering Storm" as the first of three novels that will make up "A Memory of Light." This short sequence will complete the struggle against the Shadow, bringing to a close a journey begun almost twenty years ago and marking the conclusion of the Wheel of Time, the preeminent fantasy epic of our era.
In this epic novel, Robert Jordan's international bestselling series begins its dramatic conclusion. Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, struggles to unite a fractured network of kingdoms and alliances in preparation for the Last Battle. As he attempts to halt the Seanchan encroachment northward---wishing he could form at least a temporary truce with the invaders---his allies watch in terror the shadow that seems to be growing within the heart of the Dragon Reborn himself.
Egwene al'Vere, the Amyrlin Seat of the rebel Aes Sedai, is a captive of the White Tower and subject to the whims of their tyrannical leader. As days tick toward the Seanchan attack she knows is imminent, Egwene works to hold together the disparate factions of Aes Sedai while providing leadership in the face of increasing uncertainty and despair. Her fight will prove the mettle of the Aes Sedai, and her conflict will decide the future of the White Tower---and possibly the world itself.
The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.
